Before it expires, you can continue to connect it to new outputs, and mParticle sends its already-calculated membership to each new connection (see <a href=\"/guides/audiences/connect-an-audience/\">Connect an Audience</a>).</p>\n<p>After a one-time audience expires:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Its size shows as 0.</li>\n<li>It can no longer be downloaded.</li>\n<li>You can’t add new connections or enable <a href=\"/guides/audiences/match-boost/\">Match Boost</a>.</li>\n<li>You can’t edit its environment, refresh frequency, or starting date.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>An expired audience displays the <strong>Expired</strong> status (see <a href=\"#audience-statuses\">Audience Statuses</a>). Common use cases for activating an audience without connecting it include: </p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>API-Access</strong> – Membership in an activated audience appears in user profiles and is retrievable via the <a href=\"/developers/server/profile-api/\">Profile API</a>. </li>\n<li><strong>Testing and Troubleshooting</strong> – Before sending an audience to a downstream integration (e.g., Facebook or Braze), you may want to verify its size, composition, and updates to ensure accuracy and confidence in segmentation. </li>\n<li><strong>Separation of Activation and Connection</strong> – You do not have to delete an audience to disconnect it from an output. This makes audiences more flexible and versatile, as you can preserve their definitions and criteria through the process of connecting and disconnecting outputs. </li>\n<li><strong>Deactivate without Deleting</strong> – If an audience is no longer needed but it may be in the future, you can manually <strong>Deactivate</strong> it in the UI without deleting it. This preserves the audience definition for future use while stopping membership calculation and preventing further billing.</li>\n</ul>\n<h3 id=\"audience-statuses\" style=\"position:relative;\"><a href=\"#audience-statuses\" aria-label=\"audience statuses permalink\" class=\"anchor before\"><svg width=\"16px\" height=\"17px\" viewBox=\"0 0 16 17\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http://www.w3.org/2000/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\">\n <g id=\"Symbols\" stroke=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1\" fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\">\n <g id=\"Icon/Link\" fill=\"#98A0A3\" fill-rule=\"nonzero\">\n <g id=\"link\">\n <path d=\"M9.5,12.4 C9.6,12.4 9.7,12.4 9.9,12.4 C9.8,12.5 9.8,12.5 9.7,12.6 L7.5,14.8 C5.8,16.5 3,16.5 1.3,14.8 C-0.4,13.1 -0.4,10.3 1.3,8.6 L3.5,6.4 C3.6,6.3 3.6,6.3 3.7,6.2 C5,5 6.9,4.8 8.4,5.5 C8.8,5.7 9.3,6 9.6,6.4 C10,6.7 10.2,7.2 10.5,7.6 C10.2,7.9 9.9,8 9.5,8 C9.4,8 9.2,8 9.1,7.9 C8.9,7.5 8.5,7.2 8.1,6.9 C7,6.2 5.5,6.4 4.5,7.3 L3.8,8 L2.3,9.5 C1.2,10.6 1.2,12.5 2.3,13.6 C3.4,14.7 5.3,14.7 6.4,13.6 L7.9,12.1 C8.4,12.3 8.9,12.4 9.5,12.4 Z M14.7,1.3 C13,-0.4 10.2,-0.4 8.5,1.3 L6.3,3.5 C6.2,3.6 6.2,3.6 6.1,3.7 C6.7,3.7 7.4,3.7 8,3.9 L9.5,2.4 C10.6,1.3 12.5,1.3 13.6,2.4 C14.7,3.5 14.7,5.4 13.6,6.5 L12.1,8 L11.4,8.7 C10.4,9.7 8.9,9.8 7.8,9.1 C7.4,8.9 7.1,8.5 6.8,8.1 C6.7,8.1 6.5,8 6.4,8 C6,8 5.6,8.2 5.4,8.4 C5.6,8.8 5.9,9.3 6.3,9.6 C6.6,10 7.1,10.2 7.5,10.5 C9,11.2 10.9,11 12.3,9.8 C12.4,9.7 12.4,9.7 12.5,9.6 L14.7,7.4 C16.4,5.7 16.4,3 14.7,1.3 Z\" id=\"Shape\"></path>\n </g>\n </g>\n </g>\n </svg></a>Audience Statuses</h3>\n<p>Audiences can exist in four states: </p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Inactive</strong> – The default state when an audience is first created. </li>\n<li><strong>Active</strong> – A manually activated audience, either through this feature or by connecting to an output. For example, if you have two audiences, A and B, you can specify that if a user is a member of audience A, they should be included in audience B.</p>\n<p>However, the Audience Builder will not allow you to add audience membership-based criteria that results in a circular reference. For example, imagine the following scenario:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>You’re editing an audience called <strong>High-Value Shoppers</strong>.</li>\n<li>You want to add the audience membership condition: “User <em>is a member of</em> <strong>Holiday Campaign Responders</strong>”.</li>\n<li>But <strong>Holiday Campaign Responders</strong> already references <strong>Mobile App Users</strong>, and <strong>Mobile App Users</strong> includes <strong>High-Value Shoppers</strong>.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>In this case, <strong>High-Value Shoppers</strong> ends up referencing itself indirectly through the other two audiences, making the definition invalid. </p>\n<p>To prevent this, the Audience Builder would exclude <strong>Holiday Campaign Responders</strong> from the list of audiences in the dropdown menu. If you notice that some of your audiences are not displayed when creating membership-based conditions, this could be why. </p>\n<h2 id=\"data-types-and-matching-rules\" style=\"position:relative;\"><a href=\"#data-types-and-matching-rules\" aria-label=\"data types and matching rules permalink\" class=\"anchor before\"><svg width=\"16px\" height=\"17px\" viewBox=\"0 0 16 17\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http://www.w3.org/2000/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\">\n <g id=\"Symbols\" stroke=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1\" fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\">\n <g id=\"Icon/Link\" fill=\"#98A0A3\" fill-rule=\"nonzero\">\n <g id=\"link\">\n <path d=\"M9.5,12.4 C9.6,12.4 9.7,12.4 9.9,12.4 C9.8,12.5 9.8,12.5 9.7,12.6 L7.5,14.8 C5.8,16.5 3,16.5 1.3,14.8 C-0.4,13.1 -0.4,10.3 1.3,8.6 L3.5,6.4 C3.6,6.3 3.6,6.3 3.7,6.2 C5,5 6.9,4.8 8.4,5.5 C8.8,5.7 9.3,6 9.6,6.4 C10,6.7 10.2,7.2 10.5,7.6 C10.2,7.9 9.9,8 9.5,8 C9.4,8 9.2,8 9.1,7.9 C8.9,7.5 8.5,7.2 8.1,6.9 C7,6.2 5.5,6.4 4.5,7.3 L3.8,8 L2.3,9.5 C1.2,10.6 1.2,12.5 2.3,13.6 C3.4,14.7 5.3,14.7 6.4,13.6 L7.9,12.1 C8.4,12.3 8.9,12.4 9.5,12.4 Z M14.7,1.3 C13,-0.4 10.2,-0.4 8.5,1.3 L6.3,3.5 C6.2,3.6 6.2,3.6 6.1,3.7 C6.7,3.7 7.4,3.7 8,3.9 L9.5,2.4 C10.6,1.3 12.5,1.3 13.6,2.4 C14.7,3.5 14.7,5.4 13.6,6.5 L12.1,8 L11.4,8.7 C10.4,9.7 8.9,9.8 7.8,9.1 C7.4,8.9 7.1,8.5 6.8,8.1 C6.7,8.1 6.5,8 6.4,8 C6,8 5.6,8.2 5.4,8.4 C5.6,8.8 5.9,9.3 6.3,9.6 C6.6,10 7.1,10.2 7.5,10.5 C9,11.2 10.9,11 12.3,9.8 C12.4,9.7 12.4,9.7 12.5,9.6 L14.7,7.4 C16.4,5.7 16.4,3 14.7,1.3 Z\" id=\"Shape\"></path>\n </g>\n </g>\n </g>\n </svg></a>Data Types and Matching Rules</h2>\n<p>Audience criteria can be created with several different data types, each with its own matching rules.</p>\n<h4 id=\"strings\" style=\"position:relative;\"><a href=\"#strings\" aria-label=\"strings permalink\" class=\"anchor before\"><svg width=\"16px\" height=\"17px\" viewBox=\"0 0 16 17\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http://www.w3.org/2000/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\">\n <g id=\"Symbols\" stroke=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1\" fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\">\n <g id=\"Icon/Link\" fill=\"#98A0A3\" fill-rule=\"nonzero\">\n <g id=\"link\">\n <path d=\"M9.5,12.4 C9.6,12.4 9.7,12.4 9.9,12.4 C9.8,12.5 9.8,12.5 9.7,12.6 L7.5,14.8 C5.8,16.5 3,16.5 1.3,14.8 C-0.4,13.1 -0.4,10.3 1.3,8.6 L3.5,6.4 C3.6,6.3 3.6,6.3 3.7,6.2 C5,5 6.9,4.8 8.4,5.5 C8.8,5.7 9.3,6 9.6,6.4 C10,6.7 10.2,7.2 10.5,7.6 C10.2,7.9 9.9,8 9.5,8 C9.4,8 9.2,8 9.1,7.9 C8.9,7.5 8.5,7.2 8.1,6.9 C7,6.2 5.5,6.4 4.5,7.3 L3.8,8 L2.3,9.5 C1.2,10.6 1.2,12.5 2.3,13.6 C3.4,14.7 5.3,14.7 6.4,13.6 L7.9,12.1 C8.4,12.3 8.9,12.4 9.5,12.4 Z M14.7,1.3 C13,-0.4 10.2,-0.4 8.5,1.3 L6.3,3.5 C6.2,3.6 6.2,3.6 6.1,3.7 C6.7,3.7 7.4,3.7 8,3.9 L9.5,2.4 C10.6,1.3 12.5,1.3 13.6,2.4 C14.7,3.5 14.7,5.4 13.6,6.5 L12.1,8 L11.4,8.7 C10.4,9.7 8.9,9.8 7.8,9.1 C7.4,8.9 7.1,8.5 6.8,8.1 C6.7,8.1 6.5,8 6.4,8 C6,8 5.6,8.2 5.4,8.4 C5.6,8.8 5.9,9.3 6.3,9.6 C6.6,10 7.1,10.2 7.5,10.5 C9,11.2 10.9,11 12.3,9.8 C12.4,9.7 12.4,9.7 12.5,9.6 L14.7,7.4 C16.4,5.7 16.4,3 14.7,1.3 Z\" id=\"Shape\"></path>\n </g>\n </g>\n </g>\n </svg></a>Strings</h4>\n<p>When building audiences based on string attributes, several case-insensitive matching rules can be applied: </p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Contains / Does Not Contain:</strong> Matches substrings. For example, <code class=\"language-text\">&quot;blue&quot;</code> matches <code class=\"language-text\">&quot;blue&quot;</code>, but not <code class=\"language-text\">&quot;blue shirt&quot;</code>. </li>\n<li><strong>Pattern:</strong> Allows wildcard matching. <code class=\"language-text\">*</code> represents any number of characters, and <code class=\"language-text\">?</code> represents any single character. At a high level, you start with a composable audience that has been enabled for Hybrid Audiences, then reference that audience as part of your real-time criteria.</p>\n<p>When a composable audience is enabled for Hybrid Audiences, mParticle matches each warehouse user to their mParticle profile using the identities configured in the underlying data model (such as email or customer ID). For each user where a match is found, mParticle records that user as a member of the audience on their profile. This is what makes composable audience membership available as a criterion in the Audience Builder.</p>\n<p>Before you begin, make sure that:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your composable audience is built on a user data model where <strong><a href=\"/guides/data-warehouse/composable-audiences/data-models/user-data-models/#5-confirm-your-identity-settings\">Enable this Data Model for Hybrid Audiences</a></strong> is turned on. This tells mParticle which identities to use when looking up mParticle profiles for warehouse users.</li>\n<li>The composable audience has <strong><a href=\"/guides/audiences/composable-audiences/user-guide/audiences/#step-3-configure-audience-membership-settings\">Audience Membership Settings</a></strong> set to <strong>Enable for Hybrid Audiences</strong>, and the audience has been activated so that membership is written to user profiles.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>To create a hybrid audience in the Audience Builder:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>Follow the steps above to create a real-time audience and open the Audience Builder.</li>\n<li>Click <strong>Add criteria</strong>, then choose <strong>Users</strong> to add profile-based criteria.</li>\n<li>In the criteria editor, select <strong>Audience Membership</strong> and choose the composable audience you want to reference. This limits your audience to users who are also members (or not) of that composable audience.</li>\n<li>Add additional criteria as needed, such as recent events, recency windows, or user attributes, to refine your real-time logic.</li>\n<li>Click <strong>Done</strong> when you have finished adding criteria, then continue configuring and activating the audience as you would for any other real-time audience.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>Hybrid audiences you create this way are activated and connected to outputs in the same way as other real-time audiences. You can learn more about hybrid audiences in the <a href=\"/guides/audiences/composable-audiences/overview/#hybrid-audiences\">Composable Audiences Overview</a>.</p>\n<h3 id=\"auto-complete\" style=\"position:relative;\"><a href=\"#auto-complete\" aria-label=\"auto complete permalink\" class=\"anchor before\"><svg width=\"16px\" height=\"17px\" viewBox=\"0 0 16 17\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http://www.w3.org/2000/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\">\n <g id=\"Symbols\" stroke=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1\" fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\">\n <g id=\"Icon/Link\" fill=\"#98A0A3\" fill-rule=\"nonzero\">\n <g id=\"link\">\n <path d=\"M9.5,12.4 C9.6,12.4 9.7,12.4 9.9,12.4 C9.8,12.5 9.8,12.5 9.7,12.6 L7.5,14.8 C5.8,16.5 3,16.5 1.3,14.8 C-0.4,13.1 -0.4,10.3 1.3,8.6 L3.5,6.4 C3.6,6.3 3.6,6.3 3.7,6.2 C5,5 6.9,4.8 8.4,5.5 C8.8,5.7 9.3,6 9.6,6.4 C10,6.7 10.2,7.2 10.5,7.6 C10.2,7.9 9.9,8 9.5,8 C9.4,8 9.2,8 9.1,7.9 C8.9,7.5 8.5,7.2 8.1,6.9 C7,6.2 5.5,6.4 4.5,7.3 L3.8,8 L2.3,9.5 C1.2,10.6 1.2,12.5 2.3,13.6 C3.4,14.7 5.3,14.7 6.4,13.6 L7.9,12.1 C8.4,12.3 8.9,12.4 9.5,12.4 Z M14.7,1.3 C13,-0.4 10.2,-0.4 8.5,1.3 L6.3,3.5 C6.2,3.6 6.2,3.6 6.1,3.7 C6.7,3.7 7.4,3.7 8,3.9 L9.5,2.4 C10.6,1.3 12.5,1.3 13.6,2.4 C14.7,3.5 14.7,5.4 13.6,6.5 L12.1,8 L11.4,8.7 C10.4,9.7 8.9,9.8 7.8,9.1 C7.4,8.9 7.1,8.5 6.8,8.1 C6.7,8.1 6.5,8 6.4,8 C6,8 5.6,8.2 5.4,8.4 C5.6,8.8 5.9,9.3 6.3,9.6 C6.6,10 7.1,10.2 7.5,10.5 C9,11.2 10.9,11 12.3,9.8 C12.4,9.7 12.4,9.7 12.5,9.6 L14.7,7.4 C16.4,5.7 16.4,3 14.7,1.3 Z\" id=\"Shape\"></path>\n </g>\n </g>\n </g>\n </svg></a>Auto-complete</h3>\n<p>As you define your audience criteria, a list of suggested matching values will appear based on what you’ve entered.\n<img src=\"/images/guides/personalization/journeys/journeys-2.0/audience-autocomplete.png\" alt=\"Auto-complete example\"></p>\n<p>This feature works both when building new audiences and fine-tuning existing ones, helping you save time, reduce manual effort, and improves accuracy.
